WW2 Royal Marine Long Service Medal Group, HMS Duke of York, Battleship Scharnhorst Action.

Nice mounted group of six to Royal Marine L. Alexander who served on HMS Duke of York during his time in the Royal Navy. This V-class battleship transported Churchill to the United States in 1941, took part in the convoy duty and in 1941 took part in the Invasion of North Africa. There is a lot more interesting history to this ships WW2 actions in WW2 but im sure the action in December 1943 and the sinking of the Battleship Scharnhorst must top the lot. HMS Duke of York hit the German battleship a number of times silencing one turret and a boiler room and took part in the latter 10 hour action in sinking the ship! The long service medal is named to...PLY.X.456 L.ALEXANDER. MNE. R.M. Purchased this nice group from the son of the veteran who i met a few weeks ago in the Cardiff area, medals are new to the market!
