Candid WW1 Letter Home. 1/6 South Staffs, France 1915.

A very candid seven page letter sent to a Miss Humphries , Newport, on the 10th of April, 1915 by Signaller Gamson of the 1/6 South Staffs Regiment. Gamson starts the letter by stating he can be perfectly candid as the censor does not read his letters! Ive taken some close up photos of his correspondence and i hope they help. Just a short note by me will add to his stories of trench life including having to lay new communication wire along the front as German shells had destroyed the previous wire and how he and a fellow soldier had to risk there lives in doing so avoiding German sniper fire. Also included is mention of casualties from sniper fire and there recovery and the various times sheltering from German artillery fire and trench mortars. He names a couple of friends hit etc. I have read numerous WW1 letters over the years, some can be candid to a certain degree but this letter by Gamson paints a vivid picture of trench life of the British soldier in 1915. Perfect research possibilities for sure folks! Just as a side note, many years ago i acquired a large lot of documents and personal items belonging to Gamson from a Newport house clearance, this letter i kept back due to the interesting nature of the correspondence held within.
