MK1 Standard Pattern Issue Kukri. 1904 Dated.
Scarce example of the official pattern kukri adopted by the British Army in 1903, this example is dated 1904 on the spine. The condition is very good with the blade having minimal staining and cutting edge just a few knocks. The spine is stamped ''P.P.6.04'' relating to an issue date of June, 1904. Also found stamped on the spine are the Fort William letters ''F.W''. The wooden handle has lost the top end to the back, a usual occurrence for some reason, this is an older period bit of damage as seen by the color of the wood with patina. As with all MK1's the handle is fixed to a rat tail tang by a sunken screw nut. To the top of the blade can be found a metal cup that takes the wooden handle, usually welded on, this example has come adrift so held in place by the top nut. The handle has numerous stamps relating to the soldier who was issued this example and a number 17 stamped to the handle end. The stamps are 1351, ABC, which would mean Army Bearer Corps, soldier number 1351. I can see a faint stamp at the bottom of the handle, most probably relating to the issue arsenal but cannot make them out. The leather scabbard is again in nice used condition with one large side split measuring around 5 inches in length, most probably an easy repair if wishing, this does not detract from the overall appearance and again a common fault. The front top end section has matching stamps matching the handle with an extra number 169 and 17 Coy. The back of the scabbard can be found a couple of letters and the date stamp 1903. This is a very nice example dating from the beginning of MK1 production and the more i look at it the better it gets folks, good job i don't collect Kukri blades!!
