Lee Metford 1888 Pattern ''Volunteer'' Bayonet, Mole Maker. Royal Irish Regiment.
A ''sleepy'' example that has always been together in my opinion. The ''Mole'' marked blade has its factory cutting edge without other sharpening and has minimal staining with slight knocks to the edges, hard to see. Under the ''Mole'' mark is the manufacture date of 7/91 with various other stamps and a very clear ''out of service'' stamp above. The other side has a clear WD stamp etc. Cross guard has minimal staining leaving the pommel with a certain amount of patina with working top button. The pommel on one side is stamped i believe to the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Irish. Both wooden grips are in fine chip and crack free condition. Black leather scabbard is supple with tight back stitching, metal mounts have taken on a dark patina. This bayonet is found in its period brown leather and maker marked frog that is again in supple condition with a certain amount of wear to the top finish and sorry to say missing its closing strap tip. Its top fixing button has a number stamp. Back has a clear makers stamp for the firm J&B.Pearse of London.
