RAF Air Gunner Sgt Foulds KIA Personal Effects Bag. 1944 Normandy.
This is a first pattern US Military Casualty personal effects bag with some details to the front relating to Sgt Foulds,Air Gunner, who was shot down in Lancaster, serial number ME565, during operations to bomb German fuel depots between Bayeux and St.Lo on the 8th of June, 1944. All crew were killed with only Foulds and one other air gunner being identified. All crew members where buried in the American cemetery in ST Laurent-Sur-Mer. The bags written details have a couple of irregularities when it comes to details but do match with what can be found when researching Foulds details. Such as missing one number from his RAF serial number and the letter ''u'' looking like a letter ''g'' in his name, also the letters RFA instead of RAF i presume. Dont forget details would have come off his dog-tags found on the body. There can be found to the bottom of the left corner of the details tag written in blue pencil the words RAF. And of course being found and buried in an American cemetery why would an American effects bag not be used! Anyway for sure an oddity but quite a poignant one.
