Attributed WW2 Home Guard Auxiliary Units, Fighting Knife, Name and Service Number.
In very nice condition with the long clipped Bowie back edge has minimal staining and some minor sharpening to the cutting edge. Blade has a nice clear ''I cut my way'' Motto above a clear William Rodgers makers detail. The cast cross guard is a rather substantial one compared to other example with the two slab jigged bone scales to the hilt without chips or cracks and held in place with three small rivets. Handle does appear to have been varnished at some point. The leather scabbard has had good use with a tiny hole to the bottom where the blade point has poked through, seams are tight, leather is supple enough and the top period fastening button works fine. Scabbard is stamped ''Made in England'' and has a black inked name and a few numbers to the back. Sorry but hard to make out. A nice commercially produced period knife and a model that has some evidence of being used by Early Auxiliary units during WW2. This one was found last week during a local house clearance in the Newport area of South Wales. NEW INFORMATION JUST OBTAINED. This example belonged to a private Victor Maddicks who joined the RA in 1938 serving in the 83rd Welsh field battery and then attached to the 53rd Welsh division as part of the Normandy invasion. Maddicks went through France, Belgium and up into Holland. I have just purchased his medals and a good quantity of paperwork. The name and service number match the written details on the scabbard of this knife. As does the initials scratched to both sides of the cross guard, "VM". I myself have never seen an example of this knife with such solid provenance before. I will send copies of Maddicks service information to the new owners.
