British POW Souvenir Walking Stick. Milag/Westertimke, 1944.

A super hand carved walking stick with a free running wooden ball to the central section and geometric patterns running along its length. The top section has two hand carved words either side, ''Milag 1944'' and ''Hilda''. The lower section can be seen the word ''Westertimke'' with a date 194!, this exclamation mark might well have been added as the owner didnt know how long he would be held as a POW. The condition is very nice with a super patination as expected from an item thats been handled, used, and dating back to WW2. From the details found carved on the stick we can deduce that this was a souvenir from Milag POW camp, part of the Malag und Milag Nord POW camp set up by the Germans to house captured Royal Naval and Merchant marine personnel in 1942. Camp was situated in the village of Westertimke near Bremen. Stick measures 33 inches from top to bottom.This stick was recently purchased by me from a family member who found the stick clearing a deceased relatives house, im sorry to say she had no further details but have asked her to keep me in mind if any further items show up.
