WW2 Medals and Paperwork Grouping. Merchant Navy, Torpedoed Once. Cardiff Interest..
A very nice large grouping of paperwork and medals belonging to a R.G.Owen.FFoulkes from Newport Road, Cardiff. From what i can gather, FFoulkes signed his Apprentice Indenture with the Atlantic Shipping and Trading Company Ltd in 1940 serving on his first ship SS.Hadleigh. FFoulkes was on board the Hadleigh , part of convoy ET-14, when it was torpedoed and sunk with the loss of two crewmen by U-77. This sinking is mentioned in a couple of documents. FFoulkes then served his remaining wartime service on the Empire Service, one of the Empire class Merchant Vessels run by the MoWT. As with many ''Salts'' this merchant seaman carried on from ship to ship after the war, passing his Steamship Master Certificate in 1955 ending his service in the 1960's as a Captain. There is too much paperwork relating to his service during and after the war so im not going to be able to list it all but heres a small preview.. Apprentice Certificate, wartime and postwar record books, Master Certificate, letter from the Master of SS Empire Service concerning his time on board, letter for addition of ration cards after being Torpedoed and two hand written letters i think written by FFoulkes pre war when working at sea. His large group of mounted medals come with a photocopy of his entitlement including certificate for the Coronation Medal. I myself think this is a super group with plenty of research possibility and something that came my way from a friend who does local house clearance so new to the market and never in anyone's collection before!
