WW1 Mercantile Marine Medal Pair and Paperwork. Danish/Norwegian and Cardiff Interest.
Nice grouping relating to either a Norwegian or Danish sailor who served in the Mercantile Marine during WW1. Both medals found with the papers packets and his ribbon bar. Name around the rim.. Jens.W.R.Hansen. Also found with the group are numerous post cards from the WW1 period and photos relating to his service on board ships. This lot recently surfaced from a local Cardiff house clearance and are new to the market. Most cards of sentiments on the back but mainly in Norwegian so i cannot get details but one card has a Cardiff address under a London one and there is a nice photo of the SS Halvan on the beach in Barry. Aslo found his sisters named brooch that matches the names on a few of these cards. Im only guessing but it would not surprise me that Hansen settled down in the local area after the war. As for the three period newspapers concerning the boarding of the Altmark its anyone's guess, was he on it? did he have a relative on board? or was he just a proud Norwegian???
