WW1 Welsh Regiment Death Plaque.
Death plaque to a Jeremiah Ahern, private in the Welsh Regiment, soldiers number 38953, KIA on the 15/11/1916, his name is on the Thiepval memorial. He was from the Cardiff area. Condition of the plaque is untouched, no polishing and never mounted. Brought into my shop this weekend.
WW1 British Trio and Silver ''Wound'' Badge Group
Recent find from the Cardiff area is a 1914/15 trio to a member of the ASC, A.Donaldson, included in the grouping is his silver wound badge, numbered and checks out to Donaldson, there is his cap badge that has had a pin device to the rear added and his dogtag. All items are in very nice condition, Included in the group is a German cigarette tin that the items were in when they came into the shop. With a bit of research it would appear that he was in France in less than a month after signing up, perhaps he had an occupation much needed at the front.
1914/15 Star to McClafferty, DCM, KIA Somme Action
Recent walk in to my shop is this single star to Edward McClafferty of the Northumberland Fusiliers who during an action on the Somme was awarded the DCM. Edwards killed a German officer and then wiped out the MG squad with the dead officers own pistol, quite an heroic effort. Edwards was killed in action on 22/09/1916. The medal is in very good condition with clear details to the back. Im afraid there is no info on how this one medal happened to end up in the Cardiff area. A friend printed off some info found on the internet , this will be supplied with the medal.
Large Period Photograph, Spitfire Pilot.
This perid photo measures 15 x 12 inches and has survived in quite nice condition, just one small tear to the bottom and one or two small cracks to the paper plate itself. Nice detal to the officer just before climbing itno his aircraft, This one needs a good home and to be framed before i ruin it.
1914 Field Service Pocket Book, Named.
This example is very interesting as it has been sent to France during WW1, the owners details can still be found on the remains of the postal label to the front, condition is very good with no missing pages. With these books being printed for Officer use its interesting that this one was posted to a corporal.
WW1, ''The Soldiers Own Diary''. 1918.
Neat little pocket diary given out by the London firm of ''Hargreaves'' to staff members who enlisted to fight in France during WW1. The owners details written in pencil cannot be made ot im afraid, book is well used but well preserved considering the age. Whats even more neat is the remains of a four leaf clover wrapped and found in the pages, every one needed a bit of luck at the front.
Stag Horn F-S Knife. Commando Dagger.
As described in Ron Flooks F-S fighting knife book, page 140, this example is in very nice used condition. The stag handle is in perfect condition with a flat knickle metal pommel, the brass cross guard is in good order as is the nickle mount above it. The blade is hand ground and is slightly stained, it might well have had a stone up and down its sides but it has not been over sharpened, the tip is complete. The brown leather scabbard is complete, supple and marked Sheffield. FOR SALE TO UK AND OVER 18's ONLY.
British Lee Metford Bayonet and 1882 Pattern Frog.
Just picked up this super example of the Metford baynet, the condition is above very good. The wooden handle has only one bruise and knock, it has a very crisp Victorian crown over a number and the letter ''w''. The blade is one of the cleanest ive had, no sharpening or sanding, cross grain to the tang area. Wilkinson makers mark with a Victorian crown over ''VR'' stamping to one side and broad arrow marked to the other side. Pommel has the number 742 stamped into it. The scabbard again in great condition, no rot or weakening, there are various sharp stampings into the body of the scabbard, EFD, O1 and two Vicky crowns. The bottom chape again with no issues. Lastly this is housed in a Pattern 1882 leather frog thats maker marked to the back, these frogs were used with the 1903 pattern equipment. A very nice example indeed.
Third Pattern B2 Commando Dagger
Third pattern commando dagger with the cross guard stamped ''B2'', the pommel is also marked ''3''. The bade still has 50% of its original blueing and has been sharpened, it has never been re-tipped, handle has most of its original finish, one dink to 2 ribbs, pommel screw has never been re-turned. Scabbard tip has 100% finish remaining and the leather body has both leather wings but im afarid its missing the top half. A good sound condition commando dagger which is priced accordingly with the scabbard missing its top half.
